It is the landmark of Bad Traunstein, this striking granite rock called the Wachtstein. From its viewing platform, 958 metres above sea level, you can see as far as the Schneeberg and far into the Mühlviertel on a clear day. It consists entirely of huge granite blocks and is accessible from two sides.

The surrounding area is characterised by dense forests and rolling hills, inviting you to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. Above all, the clear air and the special tranquillity of the region are a blessing that is greatly enjoyed by those seeking relaxation.

Today, the Wachtstein is a popular excursion destination and the centre of numerous festivals.

Poppy blossom magic in the Waldviertel

Splendour of colour and tradition

in and around Bad Traunstein

In the Waldviertel, where nature and tradition meet, poppies play a special role. Especially in July, blooming poppy fields transform the landscape into a colourful spectacle.

The poppy village of Armschlag, nestled in rolling hills, is entirely dedicated to this fascinating plant. An educational trail reveals interesting facts about its history, while the poppy garden displays rare varieties.

Visitors can sample regional poppy seed specialities and discover delicacies such as poppy seed oil and poppy seed strudel in the poppy seed farmer's shop. A place to marvel, savour and linger.

Herb garden Bad Traunstein

An oasis for all the senses

Surrounded by the hilly landscape of the Waldviertel, the aim here is to explore the power of medicinal plants.

A variety of medicinal, aromatic and wild herbs grow and thrive in the gardens. Particularly exciting are plants that are less well-known than lavender, thyme or mint, for example, but which play a major role in traditional Waldviertel naturopathy.

A visit to this special place full of idyll and harmony is just as enriching for those interested and health-conscious as it is for nature lovers and gourmets.
